\"\"<\/a>Lee Memorial Health System has awarded Cape Coral Hospital the first Certified Zero High Reliability Award.\u00a0\u00a0To recognize high reliability behavior and performance excellence, the award is given to hospitals or hospital units that go for a year or longer without any occurrences of hospital-acquired infections or conditions, or serious safety events.\u00a0\u00a0Cape Coral Hospital received this recognition\u00a0by achieving zero serious safety events for 18 consecutive months.<\/p>\n

The award, the first of its kind given by Lee Memorial Health System, was presented during the Feb. 28 Board of Directors meeting in anticipation of National Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 3 \u2013 9. The\u00a0Certified Zero High Reliability Award\u00a0was created to acknowledge a hospital or hospital unit\u2019s efforts to develop a culture of safety and quality care that is the responsibility of all staff members.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are honored to be the first hospital to receive this recognition and are fortunate enough to work in an environment that supports openness and teamwork.\u00a0 It enables us to learn and respond to developments and to make improvements system wide,\u201d explains Scott Kashman, Chief Administrative Officer of Cape Coral Hospital.\u00a0 \u201cBy speaking out we prevent the potential for errors and oversight.\u00a0 It demonstrates our commitment to our patients and their safety and reminds us that each and every one of us can make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lee Memorial Health System\u2019s number one core value is safety, as such it has integrated safety into its culture and encourages sharing and learning without fear of liability in order to improve patient care and prevent harm.\u00a0 Acknowledging the benefits of open communication helps create shared responsibility in preventing safety issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was, at one time, acceptable in the healthcare community that safety events or infections would occur. We have refused to accept this notion. Rather we see it as a challenge and an opportunity for advancement that has resulted in a cultural transformation throughout our organization ultimately improving patient outcomes and saving lives,\u201d says Chuck Krivenko, M.D., MHA, Chief Safety Officer for Lee Memorial Health System.<\/p>\n

Cape Coral Hospital serves as the city\u2019s premier hospital and center for health and wellness by providing an optimal healing environment focused on health, prevention, healing and connectivity.<\/p>\n

Nominations for the award are made by members of the System Quality and Safety Management Council or other interested individuals, and are reviewed and confirmed by the System Quality and Safety Management Agenda Planning Committee.\u00a0 After, they are submitted to the Clinical Operation Group for final approval.\u00a0 Frequency of this award will depend on recognition of reliability.<\/p>\n
