Mitchell \u2013 United States Postal Service<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em>Special to the Lehigh Acres \u00a0Gazette<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/the-mail-must-go-through\/mail\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11571\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11571\" title=\"mail\" src=\"http:\/\/thelehighacresgazette.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/mail.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a>It seems that this Spring and Summer, the United States has seen more than its fair share of wicked weather<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">\u2014<\/span>from the wildfires in at least five Western area states to the severe thunderstorms and winds that hit at least eight states and the District of Columbia.\u00a0\u00a0 U.S. Postal Service customers<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">\u2014<\/span>and employees<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">\u2014<\/span>were affected by these weather-related situations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Contrary to popular belief, the United States Postal Service has no official motto.\u00a0 However, a number of postal buildings contain inscriptions, the most familiar of which appears in New York City and Washington, D.C.\u00a0 The inscription reads, &#8220;Neither snow, nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds&#8221;.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">In the recent Eastern Seaboard Coast storm, well over one million businesses and residents either lost their homes or were without power<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">\u2014<\/span>in some cases, for nearly a week.\u00a0 Damage was extensive. The Postal Service was also affected, with more than 400 Post Offices and other facilities without power during the worst of the storm.<!--more--><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Thanks to the dedication of employees, customers continued to get their mail and have access to postal services. Processing facilities were up and running. Generators were provided to offices that lost power and retail services were offered wherever possible. Deliveries continued wherever it was safe.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">The response of postal employees was all the more admirable considering many also had no power themselves, and had experienced damage to their own homes.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Similar sentiments were echoed throughout areas affected by the wildfires, which have burned more than a half-million acres and destroyed more than 700 homes. Postal employees quickly got back on their routes as soon as it was safe, and relocated retail services and PO Boxes so residents could send and receive mail.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Mr. Zip\u2019s Tip:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Each year, postal employees around the country risk their own safety to save the lives of the customers they serve.\u00a0 In 2011, the Postal Service recognized 331 employee heroes.<\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Debra J.
