<\/a>As I read The Voices of Lehigh, I found myself transported back in time to a place where hate propaganda was used to stir everyday people to unspeakable actions. A time where demented people like Julius Streicher, the publisher of the notorious anti-Semitic newspaper Der St\u00fcrmer, used the power of the press on a unsuspected public to systematically lull them to apathy and acts of violence and horror.<\/p>\n
Through propaganda, a form of communication aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position, the Nazis launched the Holocaust – the extermination of approximately six million European Jews. When you read the Voices of Lehigh with 2 1\/2 pages of propaganda (racism and innuendos of minority attacks) over the same issue for the past three months, I’m reminded of the Der St\u00fcrmer newspaper. \u00a0Julius Streicher was not found to have murdered anyone, but the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg found him guilty of crimes against humanity. They concluded that the propaganda poison that was interjected into the minds of thousands was a major influence that caused them to accept the Nazi agenda (genocide).<\/p>\n
In a culture already inundated with inter-group tensions, innuendos about hate motivations behind the reporting of numerous safety code violations at the Lehigh Flea Market may be enough for members of those groups to instigate violence, eliminating the need for explicit calls to violence. In a context of economic difficulties, social and political turmoil, or during a war, propaganda becomes even more efficient. In such situations. people are often disconnected from certain aspects of society and, thus cannot assess the accuracy of what they are being told, allowing propagandists to create rumors and invent “facts” that suit their goals<\/p>\n
Hate propaganda is the public promotion or incitement of hatred against people and identifiable groups and that is likely to result in harm to those targeted. \u00a0A good example of this is the constant barrage of misinformation, innuendos and the techniques of hitting the same themes over and over again until the audience internalizes the major points. This technique has been used for the past three months in the Voices of Lehigh by Mike Welch, such as in the “The Anderson Watch” and their targeted attack on one of the hardest working volunteers in our community “Edd Weiner” who is proud of his Jewish heritage and well acquainted with these historical types of tactics. And Jack Morse’s personal attacks on the oldest civic\u00a0organization\u00a0in Lehigh Acres, the Lehigh Acres Community Council.<\/p>\n
Propaganda serves to dehumanize the members of the targeted group. It degrades them and stigmatizes them, creating the necessary illusion that the identifiable group is the enemy.<\/p>\n
While it is painful to visit the horrors of the Holocaust, it is necessary when you observe unrelenting iron-fisted tactics, intimidation and hate propaganda, such as racism and minority persecution reminiscent of Nazi tactics. And all this for what?
