Drivers are in so much congestion navigating Southwest Florida roadways, according to a new Lee County study. Lehigh Acres especially has seen its signs of road congestion increase in the past 10 years. Homestead Road and the intersection at Alabama Road made the study’s hit list.
According to the current survey (click here to read it), Homestead @ Alabama: There are traffic backups on all approaches, especially on the NB approach where insufficient left turn storage compounds the problem. Traffic operation improvements at this location are identified as part of the Homestead widening from Alabama to Sunrise. Construction is proposed to be funded in FY 2015/16 in the draft County CIP for FY 2013 through FY 2017. In the meantime, the intersection should be investigated for signal retiming improvements.
The Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization, or LCMPO, takes the survey every year. LCMPO officials ask for locations of traffic trouble spots, the nature of the problem and suggestions.
In a meeting Wednesday afternoon, members of the transportation committee said sometimes they can tweak the timing of signals and improve traffic flow.
In other cases, the problems are already being addressed in long-time construction projects such as Homestead Road.
Wednesday’s meeting was just the first step determining how these surveys will be used to improve traffic flow.
These ideas will eventually be transmitted from the Metropolitan Planning Organization to the Lee County Commission.
Citizens can make comments known by attending one of the following meetings:
Next LCMPO meeting is at 9 a.m. June 22, 2012, at the City of Cape Coral Council Chambers, 1015 Cultural Parkway Blvd., Cape Coral, Fla.
Next Citizen Advisory Committee is at 3 p.m. June 7, 2012, at the Lee County Tax Collector’s Office, 3rd Floor Conference Room, 2480 Thompson Street, Fort Myers, Fla.
There is a proposed roundabout at “confusion corners”
that needs to be reviewed based on this prominent study.
My office is on Homestead and there’s practically an accident a day on this road. Glad a study is being made, but they
should have done this during the season and when school is
open to “really” see the back-up in all 4 directions. Makes
no sense to do it now when school buses and winder snow birds
aren’t here.
