At the Annual Kiwanis Club of Lehigh Acres Community and Scholarship Awards Banquet on May 22, 2012, 49 scholarships totally more than $146,000 were handed out.
The Kiwanis Club also handed out more than $5,000 in scholarship money to Florida Gulf Coast University and a $25,000 grant to Lee County Volunteers in Medicine, now looking to open a second clinic in Ft. Myers.
The Kiwanis also honored four hometown heroes for their work in the community:
– Virginia Packer, who has donated and dedicated more than 11,500 volunteer hours at Lehigh Regional Medical Center.
– Rae Nicely for her dedication to the community as the Executive Director of Lehigh Community Services.
– Deputy Robert Margrander and Deputy James Campbell, who on Feb 29, 2012, put themselves in harm’s way to try to save a human life.
