Deputy and driver caught being reckless near a school bus stop

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a driver who was caught driving recklessly along Abrams Boulevard in Lehigh Acres early Tuesday morning at a school bus stop while the lights were flashing, nearly hitting a student.

A dashcam video obtained shows a Lee County deputy-marked car failing to stop at a stop sign near the school bus moments later.

“Every single day, at least one person runs through the flashers at the bus stop; everybody in the neighborhood is sick of it,” said Sonya McGilvray.

Neighbors say that area is dark, a dangerous place for students if drivers are not careful.

Drivers are required by law to stop when approaching a school bus when its red lights are flashing.”The person that almost hit the kid, so, yeah, that was a missed opportunity on the cop’s part,” said Derrick Rivera, a Lehigh Acres resident.

We reached out to the School District of Lee County about this incident they sent us this statement.

“The safety of our students as they travel to and from school is our highest priority. We work closely with our government and law enforcement partners so they can provide safe conditions where students get on and off the bus. We also rely on community members as they drive to be constantly aware and protective of students going to and from school.”

This is an active investigation.
