Parent Alert! Did you know there is a Florida bill seeking to prevent minors under the age of 16 from having social media accounts?

Florida House and Senate Republicans filed bills last weel designed to prevent minors under the age of 16 from having social media accounts.
The bills, House filed bill HB 1 and Senate bill SB 1788, would each require social media companies to prevent minors under the age of 16 from creating social media accounts and will require “reasonable age verification” tools to check the ages of each person who attempt to create an account. Those tools to verify age would also require independent organizations to conduct age verification and would as well require denial of accounts who do not verify their age.
The bills each have the requirement that social media platforms terminate all existing accounts that are “reasonably known” by the platforms to be held by minors under the age of 16.
