Did you know that number of respiratory virus cases among children is on the rise here in Florida?

A recent report from the Florida Health Department is showing that the state saw an increase of emergency department visits for respiratory viruses among children under age 5 from September 11-24, with activity “notably above levels observed at this time in typical years.”

According to the CDC, “RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children under one year of age in the United States. Infants, young children, and older adults with chronic medical conditions are at risk of severe disease from RSV.”

Also, according to the CDC, parents will not know if their child will be infected with a respiratory virus unless they get tested. There is no specific treatment for an RSV, but it is recommended that parents treat their child’s respiratory viruses like they would a cold including children staying hydrated along with giving children either acetaminophen of ibuprofen as needed to help lower fever.

Parents having any questions regarding their children’s health including children diagnosed with an RSV, should speak with their child’s pediatrician.
