Corded Phones are a Sure Bet!

Being without power in the midst of a summer storm is rare but it may sometimes happen. During a hurricane, the odds of a power interruption increase. Having no form of communication to the outside world can make matters worse.  Most modern homes are equipped with cordless or cell phones. The convenience these types of phones provide can be helpful but limiting in cases of emergency or no power.

Because cordless phones rely on electrically powered foundations, they will not work if your electricity provider system is experiencing an outage.  Cell phone towers also need electricity to operate. If the local power is interrupted, the towers may switch to backup batteries and generators. However, mobile phone companies often find themselves struggling to keep generators fueled and batteries charged. Charging individual cell phone batteries will also be impossible without power. Corded phones, however, do not depend on the power company the same way that other household electrical gadgets do. They are powered by electricity that flows over the telephone network through the jacket you plug into the wall. The phones work even if the electricity is off.

Consider replacing at least one of your cordless phones with an old fashioned corded phone or have one on hand that you can plug in when needed. LCEC and all local utilities work hard to provide reliable power around the clock but sometimes Mother Nature has other plans. Your emergency preparedness can help make the situation less stressful.
