New Lehigh School’s name could be Edison, baseball’s Clemente or Lehigh’s founder Ratner

The Lee School District has advanced six possible names for a new school in Lehigh Acres.

The list includes inventor Thomas Edison, baseball great and humanitarian Roberto Clemente, the Spanish word for Sunrise, and Lee Ratner, the man credited with founding Lehigh Acres.

Construction on the new elementary school, now known as “Elementary School J,” off Sunrise Boulevard in Lehigh is expected to begin in late March. The school district prefers that a new school have a name before construction begins.

The next step in choosing a permanent name for Elementary School J will be to send out a survey asking the community to rank the six recommended candidates from first to sixth.

The goal is to put a recommendation before the school board “in order to have a name by the time we break ground in late March,” Stillwell said.
