Lehigh Acres woman fatally shot, three others wounded at Brown Sugar Festival

Evereonna Sankey

A 20-year-old Lehigh Acres woman was killed Saturday night in a shooting at the Brown Sugar Festival in Clewiston that left three others wounded, the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office said.

Evereonna Sankey was found by deputies who were responding to gunshots they heard near the festival. Sankey, a licensed certified nursing assistant, later died as a result of her injuries.

At around 9:30 p.m. the Sheriff’s Office began receiving multiple calls reporting a shooting in the Harlem community area near Harlem Academy Avenue and 12th Street.

The medical condition of the others injured is unknown, the Sheriff’s Office said Sunday.

The festival is an annual event in the Harlem community that takes place during the first week of May. The festival not only works to spread awareness and appreciation of Black heritage but also provides scholarships to students in the community.

A Sheriff’s Office public information officer said the investigation remains active and asked that anyone with information to contact the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office at 863-674-5600.
