Book Discussion: “The Age of Light” by Whitney Scharer

“The Age of Light” tells the story of Vogue model turned renowned photographer Lee Miller and her search to forge a new identity as an artist after a life spent as a muse.

Intermediate Computer Skills

10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3

Learn intermediate computer skills with the guidance of our technology instructor. Using Windows 10, this class covers a variety of topics including identifying keyboard shortcuts, using the control panel, removing programs, backing up files and more. Space is very limited and registration is required.

Writers’ Workshop

6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3

Join local writers as they meet each month to practice, share and discuss various literary art forms including poetry, short stories, novels, memoirs and plays. All are welcome.

Computer Q&A

3 p.m. Wednesdays, Dec. 4, 18

Receive personalized help and instruction with any computer issues that you might be having. Questions about hardware, software, programs and apps will be answered by one of our tech-savvy librarians. Please bring your fully charged tablets, phones, e-readers, laptops or other digital devices for a hands-on help session. Laptops will be available for device non specific issues. Note: Please bring any passwords you may need for accessing your device and the services or applications that you have questions about.

Beginning Computer Skills

10 a.m. Fridays, Dec. 6, 13

Our technology instructor will cover a variety of topics including using a mouse, establishing an email account and using library online resources. Space is very limited and registration is required.

East County Craft Club: DIY Miniature Gnomes

2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7

Design your own miniature gnomes in this Scandinavian-inspired craft. All materials will be provided. This program is intended for adults 18 and over.

Receive personalized help downloading e-books, movies, music, and more from Overdrive and Hoopla, two of Lee County Library System’s largest online content providers. Bring your fully charged tablets, phones, e-readers, and other digital devices for a hands-on help session. Note: Please bring any passwords you may need for downloading apps. Kindle users will also need an Amazon account and their password for accessing it.

Word and Excel Basics

10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10

Our technology instructor provides a basic introduction to Word and Excel for new users. Using Microsoft Office 2016, learn how to create and save documents, format pages, change fonts and create basic spreadsheets. Space is very limited and registration is required.

Social Media Basics

What are tweets and status updates? How do I video chat with family and friends? Our technology instructor teaches essential skills to make use of today’s top social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Skype. Space is very limited and registration is required.

Toddler Tales

10 a.m. Tuesdays, Dec. 3, 10

For ages 18 – 36 months. This interactive and active time for toddlers and their caregiver is designed to advance prereading and social skills. They’ll experience storytelling, wordplay, felt board stories, fingerplays, puppets, singing, music-making, socializing, dancing and, of course, books.

Baby Rhyme Time

10 & 11 a.m. Wednesdays, Dec. 4, 11

For babies through 18 months. During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery rhymes and fingerplays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance.

Preschool Storytime

10 a.m. Thursdays, Dec. 5, 12

For ages 3-5. Children attend this program independently while the caregiver waits nearby. Your preschooler will continue to build relationships with other kids, books, and the library in a storytime designed specifically for them. The stories and activities are more complex, but just as fun.

Kids Read Down Fines

4 – 5 p.m. Thursdays, Dec. 5, 12, 19, 26

10 – 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21

Children and teens can earn a $2 credit for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Credit may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only and applies only to charges on overdue materials. Please bring your library card.

Family Storytime

For children through age 5. Your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of prereading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.

STEAM Saturday

2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7

Join us for family-friendly STEAM exploration. Each month will feature a different activity based on the aspects of STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. This is a great opportunity for parents and kids to build, learn and play together. For grades K-5.

R.E.A.D. to Dogs

11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14

R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team to help improve the literacy skills of children.

Polar Express Reading

6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16

Families with children are invited to kick off Polar Express Week at East County Regional Library with a reading of “The Polar Express.” Come in your pajamas and enjoy an hour of stories, songs and a craft related to “The Polar Express.” Registration is suggested as space is be limited.

Polar Express Stuffed Animal Sleepover

3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17

Children in grades K-5 are invited to join us for a Polar Express themed stuffed animal sleepover. Come and decorate a “train car” bed for your stuffed animal to spend the night in at the library. We will provide the craft supplies, you just need to bring your imagination and your stuffed animal friend.

Polar Express “Tea” Party

10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18

Families with children ages 3-5 are invited to join us for a very special Polar Express “Tea” Party. You will be in for a real treat during this special storytime.

Elementary Aged STEAM

Children in grades K-5 are welcome to join us for an elementary aged STEAM exploration. We will be offering a Polar Express themed activity based on the aspects of STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.

An Afternoon at the Movies

1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21

This is an all-ages showing about a doubting young boy who takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole. Come dressed in your pajamas and feel free to bring your own snacks to enjoy during showtime.

Library Teen Talk

Teens in grades 9-12 are welcome for a discussion about current events, everyday life, library resources and more. Teens will be encouraged to post an answer to a weekly question. Socializing during this event will be highly encouraged, so bring a friend.

Please call the East County Regional Library for movie titles before the event. Movie ratings range from G to PG-13.

Teen Game Day

2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10

Teens in grades 9-12 are welcome to join us for a special game day. There will be video games, board games and card games. Bring your friends as this will be a time to socialize and challenge each other to friendly competitions.

Way Back Movie Wednesday for Tweens

5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11

Tweens in grades 6-8 are invited to sit back and enjoy a teen movie from before they were born. Bring your friends and some snacks. The library will provide the movie and the space.

Teen STEAM
