The importance of Gun Safety
Americans everywhere are witnessing what appears to be an increase in gun violence. Whether true or not, there is much discussion throughout the media, legislatures regarding the impact of guns on our society.
The number-one concern, of course, is in regard to personal safety. Many are wondering, how do we keep ourselves safe with so many American’s owning guns? The answer to that question comes with a personal decision to not allow themselves to become victims of gun violence. As such, millions of Americans have purchased handguns and/or rifles including what are called “assault rifles” for themselves and their loved ones and guns sales are still at record levels.
When researching, we can find many opinions regarding the use of guns, both pro as well as, con. For every family, if you do choose to purchase a firearm, there are some helpful ideas to keep you and your loved ones safe. Some of those ideas include,
1) If you own a gun, make sure your weapon is locked in a safe place when not in use.
2) When children are in the area of a gun, be sure to place that gun safely & far from their reach.
3) Never be under the influence of alcohol, drugs or mind-altering medications when handling a gun.
4) Teach your children and those in your household the importance of gun safety and dangers of guns.
5) Take extra efforts to not become engaged in arguments when carrying a gun.
The NRA offers a gun safety program for children. You can find their Eddie Eagle-Gun Safety Program at https://eddieeagle.nra.org/.
Another program to help train children regarding gun safety is through Project Child Safe. You can see their specific program at http://www.projectchildsafe.org/
For adults, there are many training programs for gun safety, you may wish to contact your local “concealed carry” training organization. There are many such groups and individuals throughout Florida.
