The Lehigh Acres Community Council discussed the election process with regards to special districts during its regular meeting on Monday, June 3.
Currently Lehigh Acres’ special district’s follow an election process that differs slightly from other area non-partisan elections.
“The current system requires candidates to first past the post, even though most of the time there are more than two candidates, and some of the candidates win with less than 50 percent of voters. Other non-partisan elections have a primary and then if one of the candidates does not pass the 50 percent mark, they have a run off in the general election,” Council Vice-president Tyler Woodby said.
Lehigh Community Council President Chuck Edwards suggested reaching out to the legislative delegation in an attempt to work towards changing special district voting.
“The process needs to be fairer. I motion that the council create a resolution requesting to change the Enabling Act,” Edwards said.
Other council members agreed but stressed the necessity of putting the resolution in front of the right legislators.
