Dozens of shoes removed from power lines

Nearly a dozen shoes dangling from a power line in Lehigh Acres were removed after spending months suspended in the air.

People living along Ruth Avenue North and 67th Street West said the collection of shoes kept growing over time, becoming quite the eyesore.

Neighbors and people who drive on the road daily have often looked up wondering how the shoes got there. Some have worried not just about the community’s curb appeal, but about the negative stigmas often associated with the suspended shoes.

According to Snopes, an online fact-checker, there is no one correct explanation. Suspended shoes on power lines have been known to be the product of teenage mischief, used to mark drug hot-spots, memorials, or even gang territories.

Coincidentally, graffiti tags were found Monday afternoon nearby where the shoes were hanging, and residents said the graffiti is recent.

Florida Power and Light who owns the power poles and lines where the shoes were hanging removed them.
