Next month’s roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following
activities are free to the public:
Adult Programs
Beginning Computer Skills
Part 1: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3
Part 2: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10
A technology instructor will cover a variety of topics including using a
mouse, establishing an email account and using library online resources.
Registration is required.
Black History Month: “Escape to Falmouth” by Lena Joy Rose
2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4
Author Lena Joy Rose discusses her novel, “Escape to Falmouth,” a
historical romance that follows a displaced Cherokee maiden and runaway
slave as they flee the Smoky Mountains by way of Georgia and Florida to
get to post-emancipation Jamaica. This powerful love story illustrates the
lesser known relationship between African-American and Native Americans
during the era of slavery in the United States.
Book Discussion: “Britt-Marie Was Here” by Fredrik Backman
3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6
Britt-Marie is a socially awkward, fussy busybody who is used to being
organized. But when she walks out on her cheating husband and takes on the
task of leading the supremely untalented children’s soccer team to
victory, she just might find a place she belongs. Registration is
required.
Chess Anyone?
4 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27
Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all
ages are welcome. Bring your own chess set or use one of ours. This
program is provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

Free, informal conversation sessions for adult ESOL/ESL students.
Intermediate Computer Skills
10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7
Learn intermediate computer skills with the guidance of a technology
instructor. Using Windows 7, this class covers a variety of topics
including identifying keyboard shortcuts, using the control panel,
removing programs, backing up files and more. Registration is required.

the library’s online library. Bring your tablets, phones, e-readers and
other digital devices for a hands-on help session. Registration is

Writers’ Workshop Presents: Self Publishing 101
6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7
Lena Joy Rose, published author and founder of Minna Press Publishing,
will discuss options regarding traditional publishing versus
self-publishing, and the pros and cons of both. All are welcome.

Knitting Nook
5 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 8, 22
A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters share ideas,
techniques and projects. Attendees should bring their own projects,
however basic materials are available for newcomers. Sponsored by the

I Can Do That! Craft – Hearts and Flowers
2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11
Create a puff-puff heart wall hanging and surprise valentines for your

Word and Excel Basics
10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14
A technology instructor will provide a basic introduction to Word and
Excel for new users. Using Office 2007, learn how to create and save
documents, format pages, change fonts and create basic spreadsheets.

Social Media Basics
10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21
A technology instructor will teach essential skills to make use of today’s
top social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and
Skype. Registration is required.
Strategies to Slash Your Debt
12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21
Fifth Third Bank will present a workshop on four different approaches to
eliminating and staying out of debt. Registration is required.
Rock Around the Clock
2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25
Dave Kilbride takes music lovers of all ages on a tuneful journey through
the hits of the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s. Sponsored by the Friends of the East

is designed to advance prereading and social skills.
Preschool Storytime

Baby Rhyme Time

During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery
rhymes and fingerplays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance.

R.E.A.D. to Dogs

R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with
their owner/handlers as a team to help improve the literacy skills of
children.
Valentine’s Make and Take
3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14
Create a special valentine to give to a friend or family member.
Musical Discovery Zone
2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20
Families will get to touch and play a variety of instruments. Gulf Coast
Symphony members will be on hand to demonstrate, share and guide future
maestros.
An Afternoon at the Movies
2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21
This animated comedy asks the question: What do our pets do all day when
we’re not home? Rated PG.

A variety of Nintendo Wii games and board games are available in this drop

Tween Saturdays

Decorate your own Frisbee then join us for the indoor Frisbee game

Magnetic Slime

Make your own magnetic slime using common ingredients. Program limited to
