Toddler’s Uncle Charged with
Negligence in Accidental Shooting

Trevon Armstrong

A Fort Myers man is under arrest after his two year old niece accidentally shot herself with the gun he carelessly left lying on a bed.  Trevon Armstrong of 554 Alabama Road, Lehigh Acres, turned himself in at the Lee County Jail last night and faces charges of Culpable Negligence and Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon.

According to the investigation, Armstrong, his sister, and her toddler all resided at the same residence at 554 Alabama Road, Lehigh Acres.  On October 19, 2015 at approximately 5:00 p.m., the toddler and her mother were in Armstrong’s room, when the mother left the room to charge her I-Pad.  The victim’s mother says twenty seconds after leaving the room, she heard a loud “pop.”  As she reentered the room, she observed what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the toddler’s abdomen and noticed a black semiautomatic pistol fall from the bedding.  The toddler was rushed to the hospital and luckily survived her injuries.

An investigation by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit determined that the gun belonged to Armstrong, that he left the firearm in an unsafe and easily accessible location…and by doing so showed complete disregard for the safety of the victim.

Armstrong was forbidden from possessing a firearm due to a previous felony conviction.  His rap sheet is scattered with drug and weapons possession charges.
