Counterfeit cash has been popping up in Lehigh Acres, and it’s not just big bills as some stores are now forced to check $1’s and $5’s to make sure they’re real.
Most people don’t think it’s a big deal if it’s a fake $20, but when you take it to the bank…when you’ve got one fake $20 and fake $100 and big $50’s, it adds up, and our local owners weren’t happy.
You have to stop and check every one, and then people look at you like, Why are you doing that? It’s a $1. The only way to stop it is to take the necessary time to check one bill and check them all.
We did check with both Fort Myers Police Department and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. They say there has not been an increase in counterfeit cash, and that it’s simply normal.
