New FAA Mandates
Force Drone Users To Register

If you own a drone in Southwest Florida or plan on getting one under your tree later this month, you most likely will have to register it with the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA unveiled new regulations Monday which cover nearly all drones, other than those weighing less than half a pound, in a bid to hold reckless operators accountable.

More than a million drones are forecast to be sold during the holiday season and regulators are trying to send a message to users that the devices are more than just toys and their misuse could lead to punishment and stiff fines.

Registration for drones begins on Dec. 21 and costs $5 for each one. Those registering within 30 days will have their fees reimbursed. FAA Press Release

More users will ultimately mean more regulations, and the FAA says non-registrants could face thousands of dollars in fines and even prison time if they don’t toe the line.
