Dianne Chilton found the remains of two horses while driving near the intersection of Clark Avenue and 13th Street.
The Lee County Sheriff’s office said horse owners are allowed to kill and consume the meat. According to state statute, it is illegal to consume or sell it unless it is properly marked, stamped and described as horse.
In an email statement, Representative Heather Fitzenhagen said, “killing a horse for food to eat personally does not appear to violate the law.
However, the manner in which the animals were killed may give rise to an animal cruelty charge. Additionally, dumping a carcass is crime.
If the perpetrators are hungry, I hope they will consider availing themselves of resources like the Harry Chapin Food Bank rather than commit this act”, said Fitzenhagen
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating and if the act proves to be criminal, further action could be taken.
