Fatal Crash (Updated)

A 45-year-old Immokalee man died in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday night in Lehigh Acres.

It happened just before 9 p.m. at the intersection of SR-82 and Columbus Boulevard. The man has been identified as 45-year-old Francisco J. Contreras.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Contreras was driving a Toyota Corolla when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection and drove into the path of another Toyota Corolla, driven by 64-year-old Clifford Oliveira, of Cape Coral.

The vehicle Contreras’ was driving landed in a ditch after the collision. Bystanders and a first responder pulled him out, but he did not survive. Two other passengers in the vehicle received minor injuries.

The passenger in the other vehicle, 64-year-old Elizabeth Oliveira, of Cape Coral, was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the vehicle received minor injuries.

SR-82 was closed in both directions for approximately 4 hours while troopers investigated.

A fatal two-vehicle crash unfolded Tuesday shortly after 9 pm in Lehigh Acres – at Columbus Boulevard and SR-82.

One of the vehicles went into the water of a canal where bystanders and a first responder pulled out the driver who did not survive. The other driver was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital with traumatic injuries.

Two other people received minor injuries in the crash.

Road blockage was reported on both lanes of SR-82 from Eisenhower Boulevard to Columbus Boulevard and all drivers were being diverted along Meadow Road.
