Following the announcement of Paige Kreegel’s for the congressional seat held by U.S. Rep. Trey Radel, and the launch of a new ad campaign by State Sen. Lizbeth Benacquisto, R-Fort Myers — who’s said she’s considering a congressional bid, attention turned to Benacquisto’s Senate seat.
If Benacquisto runs for Congress this could put State Rep. Matt Caldwell, R-Lehigh Acres, in the column of likely Senate candidates. Caldwell has said he would not run against Benacquisto, but if she does move, “I’d give it serious consideration.”
Caldwell said most of the House district he holds is in that Senate district, so he’s familiar to voters and the issues. Although his former Lehigh home was not in the Senate district, Caldwell has recently moved into a new home in North Fort Myers — a change driven by his family’s need for a larger place, he said.
