Trey Radel Bought Cocaine
From Undercover Officer

Trey Radel

As first reported by Politico, Representative Trey Radel, the Republican who represents the west coast of Florida from Fort Myers to Marco Island, has been charged with possession of cocaine in the District of Columbia stemming from an October 29 incident.

The AP is reporting the congressman was involved in “buy and bust” operation.

Radel, 37, was charged with misdemeanor possession of cocaine in D.C. Superior Court today. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 180 days in jail and a fine of $1,000 for a first offense.

According to Bill Miller with U.S. Attorney’s Office for District of Columbia, more will come out on the drug charges during the hearing Wednesday in D.C. Superior Court. The hearing will be before Judge Tignor at 9 a.m.

Congressman Radel released the following statement Tuesday evening:

“I’m profoundly sorry to let down my family, particularly my wife and son, and the people of Southwest Florida. I struggle with the disease of alcoholism, and this led to an extremely irresponsible choice. As the father of a young son and a husband to a loving wife, I need to get help so I can be a better man for both of them.

“In facing this charge, I realize the disappointment my family, friends and constituents must feel. Believe me, I am disappointed in myself, and I stand ready to face the consequences of my actions.

“However, this unfortunate event does have a positive side. It offers me an opportunity to seek treatment and counseling. I know I have a problem and will do whatever is necessary to overcome it, hopefully setting an example for others struggling with this disease.

“Please keep my family in your prayers.”

Byron Donalds, a member of the Naples Tea Party, was one of several candidates who ran against Radel in last year’s Republican primary.

He released the following statement to Lehigh Acres Gazette. “We are extremely disheartened with the news of Congressman Radel’s arrest. My wife and I are praying for Trey and his family, and are hoping for his full recovery.”
