A Democratic lawmaker decided that he would endear himself to voters by explaining that Congress’s members only gym actually really sucks right now. Why, you might ask? Because there are no clean towels. Here is Bruce Braley (D-IA) in his own words:
“There’s hardly anybody working down there. There’s no towel service, we’re doing our own laundry down there. And we pay a fee to belong to the House gym. So this is no different than if you’re working for an employer that offers a wellness program. You pay a fee to belong, that’s what we do there.”
In case you had forgotten, Head Start programs have been shuttered, small businesses can’t get loans and hundreds of thousands of federal government employees are furloughed and cancer patients don’t get treated and national parks turn away visitors. But the exclusive gyms available only to members of Congress have remained open throughout the shutdown.
