Neighborhood Making Strives
For A Better Community

by  Harold Tanner

I was told you were looking for stories about groups in Lehigh that have joined to make their area look beautiful and inviting. The Kellwood addition off Beth Stacy is one such area. We started off by organizing a Neighborhood Watch program. Then a few people decided we should clean the area up and make it eye appealing for visitors or people looking for a place to buy and move to. A community wide yard sale was held with the proceeds to go for making the area better looking. One neighbor donated paint and raised letters for our sign at the entrance. Two others took to cleaning the area around the sign. New mulch was bought along with plants and flowers. A pump was installed to water them. Then a flag pole was donated and a flag. Kids were chaining their bikes to trees nearby so a bike rack was installed along with a bench so children waiting for their bus would have a place to lock their bikes and sit. Next one resident bought landscape timbers and built boxes around the trees then placed mulch in the boxes. This is all located on county property which in 7 years this writer as lived here never seen a county crews mow so several residents use there mowers and gas and keeps the grass in the entrance mowed. Ace Hardware here in Lehigh Acres donated a power edger to help keep curbing to look neat. Home Depot donated the bench at the entrance. Several residents took a weekend and helped an elderly couple by cleaning there yard and taking paint and painted the front of the house which was stained real bad from well water used in the sprinklers and they adjusted the sprinklers so they would not spray the house. Truly Nolan was contacted about the house being invested by ants. They sent a tech there and he treated the house killing the ants. This was donated by Truly Nolan.
