Health Management Associates Inc., which operates Lehigh Regional Medical Center has disclosed that it received a subpoena from the Securities and Exchange Commission on April 25, requesting documents “related to accounts receivable, billing write-downs, contractual adjustments, reserves for doubtful accounts, accounts receivable aging, and revenue from Medicare, Medicaid and from privately insured or uninsured patients,” according to a news release.
The company said it is cooperating with the investigation.
“Health Management is unable to determine the potential impact, if any, of this investigation,” the release said.
In August 2011, HMA disclosed it had received two federal subpoenas from the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. One subpoena requested information on the company’s physician referrals and ownership and management of its whole-hospital physician joint ventures. Another requested information on emergency room management, including the use of ProMed software.
HMA operates 71 hospitals in 15 states, including 23 hospitals in Florida. In Southwest Florida, HMA operates Lehigh Regional Medical Center in Lehigh Acres; Charlotte Regional Medical Center and the Peace River Regional Medical Center in Charlotte County; and two Physicians Regional Hospital campuses in Collier County.
