“When I go out of doors in the summer night, and see how high the stars are,” wrote 19th-century philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, “I am persuaded that there is time enough, here or somewhere, for all that I must do.” With this illustration of a red, white, and blue striped star, the U.S. Postal Service celebrates American patriotism with a new Forever (46 cents) stamp on sale now nationwide.
Many of our nation’s state flags prominently feature stars in their design. The groundbreaking Flags of Our Nation series, issued between 2008 and 2012, celebrates the flags of all fifty states, six territories and commonwealths, and of course, the Stars and Stripes. . The star is one of the nation’s quintessential symbols, a shining reminder of our indomitable spirit. The Patriotic Star stamp features a red, white, and blue five-pointed star on a white background. The star on the stamp is actually two stars—a smaller one inside a larger one. Both have five points, like the stars on the American flag.
Created digitally by artist Nancy Stahl, the star is designed to look like it is crafted from striped ribbon. Greg Breeding served as the art director on the project.
Customers have 90 days from the official first day of issuance date to obtain first day of sale postmarks on new stamps and stationery items. Collectors may request a local first day of sale postmark by mail only. There is no charge for servicing of first day of sale postmarks up to 50 covers. Mail-in customers must supply a self-addressed envelope with sufficient return postage applied to return the serviced covers.
To obtain the first day of sale postmark, mail stationery items bearing Patriotic Star stamps to: Customer Relations USPS, 79 Mid Cape Terr Ste 8, Cape Coral, FL 33991. Please specify which city you are requesting a postmark for—Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, or Sanibel. All orders must be postmarked by June 19, 2013.
