On Sunday March 24, 2013 at approximately 1:13am, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call in reference to possible shots fired in the area of the 4700 block of Leonard Boulevard in Lehigh Acres. Deputies from Bravo district responded to the area and located Salvador Burmudez Levid (DOB 04/28/90) on the shoulder of the road with severe possible life threatening injuries. Deputes were able to determine that a vehicle had struck Levid while riding his bicycle and the suspect vehicle had fled the scene. Due to the nature of the crash the traffic unit responded to the scene.
Preliminary crash investigation revealed the following facts. Levid was riding his Mongoose bicycle eastbound on Leonard Boulevard in the westbound lanes of travel. He was in the middle of the roadway and had a small headlamp on and was also wearing headphones. An unknown vehicle was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Leonard Boulevard at a high rate of speed. The driver of the unknown vehicle began to slam on his brakes, causing his vehicle to skid westbound. The unknown vehicle then reentered the westbound lanes as it approached Levid. The driver then attempted to change his vehicles direction of travel, to avoid hitting Levid, but was unsuccessful and his vehicle struck Levid. The impact vaulted Levid and his bicycle in a northwest direction.
The unknown vehicle then fled the scene without rendering any aid to Levid, who had sustained severe and possible life threatening injuries. Levid was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital as a trauma alert. The crash investigation continues.
